Dear Monty, I currently rent a patch of carpet by the fire and wonder whether I should invest in my own spot. Signed, Hesitant in Hackney.
Dear Hesitant, ownership is a deeply moving thing. A cat who owns their patch will defend it to the last crumb, will not be moved by guests, and will develop a regal posture within three weeks. That said, ownership brings maintenance: you must scratch, groom and reinforce the scent daily. If you are the kind of cat who forgets a corner for a week, renting is perhaps wiser. For everyone else, I recommend buying, and thanking me with a small salmon.
